Major General Ohwonigho Jimmy Akpor was born in Ebedebiri, Bayelsa State to the family of Chief William and Mrs Lady Akpor on 15 May 1969. He is a native of Ofoni Town, Sagbama Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. He had his primary education in Toru-Angiama, and his secondary education in Oproza Grammar School, Patani all in Delta State. He gained admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna as a member of 39th Regular Course in September 1987. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the Corps of Infantry in September 1992.

Major General Akpor has attended several military courses among which are Young Officers Course Infantry, Anti-Tank Platoon Commanders Course and Company Amphibious Operations Course. Others are Regimental Intelligence and Security Officers Course, Junior and Senior Staff Courses, Company Commanders Course, Commanding Officers Course and National Defence Course.

He has also held several appointments since he was commissioned, which include Mechanical Transport Officer, Unit Adjutant, Company Second-in-Command and Officer Commanding. Others are Staff Officer Grade 2, Operations Officer, Staff Officer Grade 1 Operations and Commanding Officer 103 Battalion, Enugu. Furthermore, Jimmy was a Chief Instructor, Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI), Jaji, Deputy Director Personnel Services, Army Headquarters Department of Administration, Deputy Director Exercises Army Headquarters Department of Training and Operations (before the unbundling) and Coordinator Nigerian Army Operations Centre, Army Headquarters. Jimmy’s last 2 appointments were Commander 1 Division Garrison (where he was a member of the Kaduna State Security Council) and lastly, Director of Military Training, Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna before his recent posting as the Director Defence Information.

Major General Akpor participated in several foreign operations among which were Operation LIBERTY (ECOMOG, Liberia), Operation SAND STORM/TIGER TAIL (Sierra Leone), United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL). Others were ECOWAS Mission in Liberia (ECOMIL), African (Union) Mission in Sudan (AMIS) and twice in United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).

Major General Ohwonigho Jimmy Akpor holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography (from the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy) as well as a Masters in Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan. He is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management. Jimmy is married with children. His hobbies include watching people and listening to inspirational music.
