Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr was born on 20 August 1962 at Lokoja. He started his cadetship training on 5 March 1986 as a member of 27 Short Service Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army on 20 December 1986 to the rank of Second Lieutenant and later converted to Regular Combatant Commission in the year 1996.

The Senior Officer attended Ahmadu Bello University Zaria where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science. He also attended the University of Madras (Defence Services Staff College Annex) in India where he backed a Master of Science Degree in Defence and Strategic Studies. General Sawyerr is also a fellow of Professor Iya Abubakar Resource Centre in Bauchi.

General Sawyerr has held several military appointments commensurate to his rank. Just to mention a few; ADC to General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Armoured Division, ADC to Commander ECOWAS Monitoring Group  (ECOMOG) Field Commander and 2 times ADC to Lieutenant General TY Danjuma (Retired) former Minister of Defence, Senior Instructor Tactics Department of Nigeria Army Armoured School, Directing Staff Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, Assistant Director Operations Army Headquarters Department of Army Training and Operations, Commanding Officers 231 Battalion Biu/Commanding Officer Nigerian Battalion (NIBATT 22) United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), Deputy Director Welfare Service Army Headquarters Department of Army Administration (DOAA).

He was also the Chief of Staff Headquarters 7 Division Operation ZAMAN LAFIYA Maiduguri, Director of Administration Admin Branch Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, Commander 22 Bde Ilorin/ Dikwa Operation LAFIYA DOLE Borno State, Director Directorate of Army Training Support Headquarters Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Nigerian Army (NA) Minna, Deputy Director Doctrine, Headquarters Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Nigeria Army (NA) Minna, Commander 6 Division Task Force Brigade Operation LAST HOLD Kirenowa Borno State, Director Plans Department of Army Policy and Plans Army Headquarters. He was Commandant Nigerian Army Armour School Bauchi before his recent appointment as DDI.

General Sawyerr have also attended several military courses amongst which are; Young Officers Course Armour Bauchi, Young Officers Course Infantry Jaji, Sagaie Communication Instructors Course Bauchi, Junior Division Army Staff Course Jaji, Company Commanders Course Armour Bauchi, Senior Staff College Course at the Prestigious Defence Services Staff College Wellington India, Leadership in National Security Course Nigerian Army Resource Center(NARC) Abuja, Leadership and Change Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education.

It is important to mention that General Sawyerr attended several military operations and received several awards. Notably among them are; ECOMOG Liberia, United Nation Mission in Liberia, Operation FLUSHOUT, Operation ZAKI/MESA, Operation ZAMAN LAFIYA, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Operation HARBIN KUNAMA II, Operation LAST HOLD.

General Sawyerr is a recipient of several awards. Worthy of mention are; Best Student Sagaie Communication course, Best Student Young Officers’ Course (YOC) Armour, Best Student Mortar Platoon Course, Best Student YOC Infantry, Infantry Centre Corps and School (ICCS) Commandant Merit Award, Recipient of Best ICCS Commandant Paper, Best Student Regimental Signal Officers Course, Recipient of Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award.

The Senior Officer is decorated with the following medals and awards; Force Service Star (FSS), Meritorious Service Star (MSS), Distinguished Service Star (DSS), General Service Star (GSS), Pass Staff College Dagger (+)  (psc+), Command Medal (CM), Field Command Medal (FCM), Training Support Medal (TSM), Fellow Defence College, Fellow Institute of Development Association of Nigeria, Fellow Security and Forensic Studies Nigeria, Professional Fellow of the Institute for Emergency, Crisis, Disaster, Safety, Environment and Risk Manager, Fellow Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Recipient of Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award 2016.

His hobbies are Cinematography, watching football, Creating Ideas, plays Golf and Badminton. General Sawyerr is happily married and the union is blessed with 3 children.
