The Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin on Monday, joined President Mohammadu Buhari and other dignitaries at the National Arcade, Abuja for wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the 2018 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration.
The event is an annual ceremony organised by the Ministry of Defence on behalf of the Federal Government in honour of service men and women who laid down their lives during the first and second world wars, Nigerian civil war, peace support and various internal security operations including victims of the Boko Haram insurgents in the North – East of Nigeria.
The event is also used to honour the veterans who are still alive as well as soliciting for financial support for their well-being and their families.
The theme of the 2018 Armed Forces Day Celebration is “Appreciating the Contribution of the Armed Forces in ensuring Peace and Security”.
Prominent Personalities at the event included the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, Chief of Army Staff, Lt, General Tukur Burutai, CNS, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, IGP Idris Kpotun Abubakar, Head of Paramilitary and Security Agencies, Commanders of Services and Tri-Service Establishments, Senior Military Officers, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Members of the Federal Executive Council, National Assembly Members and Representatives of the Widows of the Fallen Heroes.
